All the participants had a great time listening to the speakers. |
Last July 27, I had the opportunity to attend the Seminar on
Information Management and Information Technology organized by the Philippine
Library Association, Inc. (PLAI)—Western Visayas Regional Librarians Council
(WRLC). The organization is headed by Mr. Stephen Alayon, Information
Specialist of Southeast Asia Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, himself a
highly-acclaimed personality in the field of librarianship. The event was
hosted by Central Philippine University’s Henry Luce III Library under the
stewardship of its director, Dr. Melda Estember.

It’s been a refreshing experience since it gave me the chance
to reacquaint with some old fellows. But what I really liked about what the
resources speakers who are all masters in this field. Mr. Michael Pinto,
director of libraries at the University of St. Louis—Tuguegarao, who made a trip
to Iloilo in preparation for a national convention of librarians this November,
was generous enough to spare some of his time, despite his hectic schedule. Mr.
Pinto placed 8th at the Licensure Exams for Librarians in 2006 and
is now the executive vice president of the PLAI. He is also the author of Layb
Life… Mr. Pinto’s talk centered on the issues and challenges in managing
Philippine libraries, which definitely gave us an insight on the status of the
libraries today, the problems that we are facing and how we cope with these
problems and become effective information specialists.

The second lecture was given by Dr. Reysa Alenzuela, a
petite but powerful figure in the local field of librarianship. Dr. Alenzuela
served as the director of the Thomas Jefferson Information Center at the US
Embassy in Manila. She is now lecturing at the Central Philippine University
and chairs the Library and Information Science program of the University of San
Agustin. I am personally taken away by the wisdom of this lady. Her infectious
knowledge makes her all the more charming—not to mention her great fashion
sense and fluency in English that make her a towering personality. Her talk
centered on where she is best at—internet and how to manage information centers
in this digital age.
The organizers expected only around 50 participants. 60 at
the most. But there were around 112 attendees at the event! We definitely look
forward to another lecture series and I hope I can also share my knowledge in
terms of taking advantage of the internet in promoting learning resources. Image Credits: Stephen Alayon/Official Facebook Pafe of PLAI-WVRC
